Program Advising at the Faculty of ALES

The Student Services Assistant and Student Advisors from the Undergraduate Student Services office can advise you on specific inquiries you may have about your program and academic record.  Specifically, Student Advisors are there to assist with:

  • Program planning
  • Obtaining a copy of your program checksheet
  • Requesting permission to register as a visiting student
  • Deferring a final exam
  • Advising on Approved Program Electives (APE) that fit with your program
  • Taking an APE that is not on the APE list
  • Requesting additional transfer credits
  • Providing advice about changing your major or minor
  • Preparing for convocation/graduation

Please note that many of your questions can be answered at the front desk by the Student Services Assistant.  An appointment with a student advisor is often not needed.

Drop In advising

Drop-in advising is available on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9:00 – 11:30am and Thursday afternoon from 1:30 – 3:30pm.  Appointments are required for advising services outside of these hours.

Appointments with Student Advisors

To book an appointment with a Student Advisor, please contact questions@ales.ualberta.ca, (780) 492-4933, or 2-31 GSB with your name, student ID number, and a detailed description of what you would like to discuss with your student advisor.  Because of the volume of appointments requested, we require 24 hours notice for booking or cancelling appointments.

*If you are more than ten minutes late, you may need to reschedule for another day.

Many course related issues must be dealt with by the DEPARTMENT that offers the course.  You should consult with individual departments to:

  • Register for a course you are unable to register for on Bear Tracks (e.g. For a CHEM course, please contact the Chemistry department)
  • Register for an individual study course, after you have spoken with an academic advisor
  • Seek help if you are having problems with an instructor.  However, before going to the department, you MUST first meet with the instructor to attempt to resolve the issue(s).
